HS and Diet

With Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) there are many things that can cause flares. From stress, warm temperatures and sometimes diet. On November 30, 2023, Hope for HS Detroit had a support group session focused on HS and Nutrition. Dietitian Jillian Ondreyka (MPH, RDN, IFNCP, IBCLC, CLT), founder of Embrace Health Nutrition, spoke to the group about how food can trigger HS flares. Jillian, who also suffers from HS, spoke about how high glycemic foods (white bread, white pasta, etc) and night shade foods (tomatoes, potatoes, ect) can trigger flares for some people. HS flares from food can occur within 72 hours (3 days) from consumption. Jillian encouraged people who believe their HS flares is related to food to track mood, food intake, medications taken and activity to see if there is a correlation. She also encouraged HS patients to eat a low glycemic diet high in veggies, fruit and fish and low in carbohydrates. She also said getting proper sleep and reducing stress can help with preventing HS flares.
